School is never the easiest thing to go through, and that’s just the teachers! So when we consider the experience of an adolescent, experiencing the process of hormonal change, challenges to peer status, and pressure to succeed academically in the face of constant temptation, we gain no small insight into the motivational strategies behind some student behaviour. This serves not to act as an excuse for that behaviour, but rather to serve as a signpost we can use to bring about change in such students, as well as in ourselves.
Due to the changing nature of youth, and perhaps more importantly their perception of self, those of us in the teaching profession may find it difficult at times to compete with the many distractions that vie for the attention of those we attempt to educate, as if this weren’t enough, there are several other surrounding issues that further complicate matters. Once we throw in misplaced anger, low self esteem, inappropriate behaviour, and badly formed construction of future prospects, the odds appear to be stacked well against us drawing the requisite level of interest from our students to enable them to fully appreciate and thus participate in the education process to attain the qualifications we know that they can.
With this in mind, and having worked in the secondary and F.E sector providing amongst other things training in the areas of motivation, exam techniques, and memory improvement to students from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures, we felt that in order to tackle these issues, it was essential to spend time working with the very people who instigate the necessary change in the educational development of young and talented students.
Tactical Teaching is a two day training that seeks to redefine the manner in which teachers interact with students, with a view to bringing about better communication, instilling a greater sense of belonging and community, improved behaviour, actualized self realization, and an enhanced perception of self and future outcomes.
The ultimate aim of the training is to enable those who attend to replicate as well as put into effect the principles and strategies employed over the two days. It is specifically designed to widen behavioural flexibility and creativity, to allow staff to successfully meet the challenges and opportunities inherent in school life
Ultimately, the incorporation of these skills and others like them into the everyday working life of teachers will establish dramatic changes both in the behaviour of students and in the manner in which they perceive themselves. Since these changes will be deliberately instigated by the teaching staff, a greater sense of community and respect becomes apparent, as after all through the eyes of an awakened multitude, a provider of knowledge is a provider of life.
Remember, if you don’t believe that, then why should they?
